"Still waters run deep", probably the most appropriate description of both the fjords of Norway's landscape and the spirit of its people. Norwegians boast a long history of tough explorers and innovative minds, who prefer to let their actions speak for themselves.
Norway is an interesting setting for startups, it has a social benefits system that puts norwegian entrepreneurs in a position to take greater business risks and suffer fewer consequences if things go wrong. This same system also makes it difficult to employ and maintain employees while trying to keep lean, a nice formula for innovation.
Hard industries like oil, gas and fisheries make for a strong norwegian economy, and provide unusual opportunities for startups in these sectors. That's not to say Norway hasnt created some notable software, the origins of Siri are norwegian, and like its neighbour, Finland, Norway has produced some notable gaming companies.
Norway's strong economy has meant that it now has the fourth highest GDP per capita in the world. Norwegians have great spending power and startups are nicely positioned to take advantage of this.
We feel Norwegian startups don’t get enough attention and we'd like to brag on their behalf.
What do all these companies have in common?
- They were founded in Norway in the 21st century
- They're on their way to becoming disruptors and game changers
- The founders probably get to the office on skis
